Abstract

The aim was to evaluate the association between the structure (density, basal area and height) and composition of woody species in the mangrove community and physicochemical parameters of interstitial water (pH, salinity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, oxygen percentage and total dissolved solids), in nine sites around La Graciosa Bay, at the Wildlife Refuge, Punta de Manabique, Izabal, Guatemala. The composition of the plant community included nine species. The most abundant were the white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa) and red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle); the latter is the dominant species.
The Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) analysis and hierarchical clustering diagrams from Morisita-Horn
dissimilarity, reveal that there is a spatial distribution
pattern of species richness according to the sampling sites and reveal that there is homogeneity between the structure of species and physicochemical parameters of interstitial water in the site. However, the analysis did not show an association between the species structure and composition, and physicochemical parameters of water. Statistically significant values were observed regarding the relationship between geographical coordinates and the richness and density of species. There is evidence of a spatial distribution pattern of species richness and density in the plant community supported by the Mantel test. Although the relationship between composition and community structure of the mangrove in La Graciosa Bay, and the analyzed physicochemical parameters is not supported by the results obtained.
