Ultrasonic detection of insectivorous bats in coffee crops of La Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala

Abstract

Insectivorous bats were studied in three coffee crops of La Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala. Using the AnabatTM II detector we identified two species (Eptesicus brasiliensis, with probable occurrence in the country, and Lasiurus intermedius) and one genus (Myotis spp.) belonging to the Vespertilionidae family, and two species (Cynomops mexicanus, not previously registered in the country, and Molossus
rufus), one genus (Eumops spp.) and one sonotipe belonging to the Molossidae family. These species are reported for the first time in the area by acoustic means. Complementarity is of 100% for families, genus and species when comparing the ultrasonic detection with the results obtained previously in the area through mist nets. The richness of bat species in the coffee crops increases by 87.5%. The
spectrograms show evidence of feeding activity of Molossus, inferred by the high pulse repetition rate in so-called feeding buzz. The two potential Eumops species are classified in the List of Endangered Species of Guatemala. In order to include E. brasiliensis and C. mexicanus in the species list of the country, collected specimens must be deposited in scientific collections.
