Abstract

In this work, we carry out a design and a preliminary dimensioning of a poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) plant, based on microorganisms and using glycerol as raw material. The process comprises three main sectors: a) raw material purification, where the glycerol stream (coming from a biodiesel production plant) is purified by eliminating methanol; b) fermentation, where the growth of the microorganisms (Bacillus megaterium) takes place and the production of PHB occurs. In this point, a model of the specific growth rate for B. megaterium is implemented within a control vector parameterization approach; c) biopolymer separation, which includes the extraction process, where cellular walls are exposed to lyses and a purified product, is obtained.
