Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the presence of strains of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the community (MRSA-com) in isolates from skin infections of patients from Hospital Roosevelt and National Hospital Pedro de Bethancourt, Antigua Guatemala.

To do this we conducted a descriptive exploratory study which consisted of a sampling period of 12 weeks in the microbiology laboratory from Hospital Roosevelt and National Hospital Pedro de Bethancourt, Antigua Guatemala. Strains were collected the following criteria: to have been identified as S. aureus, submitted all beta lactamics resistance by means of the resistance to oxacillin and cefoxitin according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standars Institute (CLSI) criteria and variable resistance to macrolides and lincosamides.

For the study we selected, strains isolated from skin and soft tissues of patients with less than 48 hours of hospitalization. The selected strains as suspicious were reseeded and stored for later shipment to the Reference Laboratory Gram Positive Cocáceas Public Health Institute of Chile for a study of phenotypic and genotypic characterization of strains for the mecA gene, femA and Pvl.

During the 12 weeks of sampling in the two national hospitals, we obtained 12 strains of MRSA-com suspicious from Roosevelt Hospital only, which were sent for typing. Of these, four were reported as contaminated and the remaining eight were analyzed for the identification of genes: mecA and Pvl. It was observed that the total strains presented the mecA gene and only two Pvl gene.

It was demonstrated the existence of strains MRSA-com producing Pvl gene in two isolates from discharge of patients from Hospital Roosevelt of Guatemala, this finding highlights the need for further studies to establish the magnitude of the health problem that represents to the country to that health professionals properly guide antimicrobial therapy in cases where there are associated risk factors.
